UKRAINPEX 2012 - Stamps and More This Coming Fall in Toronto Sept 28-30 *UPDATED

From the Encyclopedia of Ukraine Volume 1 A-F, edited by Voloymyr Kubijovyč, University of Toronto Press, ©1984, isbn 0802033628, page 312:

‘Born on 07-September-1877 in Dobromirka, Zzarazh county, Galicia, and died on 01-October-1949 in Karaganda, Kazakh·SSR, Ukrainian Catholic Bishop. After attending university in Vienna and Innsbruck, Budka received a doctorate in theology and was ordained in 1905. He became prefect of the L’viv Theological Seminary and involved himself with Ukrainian emigration through the church-sponsored St. Raphael Galician and Bukovynian Emigrant Aid Society, which he helped to found. In October 1912, he was consecrated Bishop and in December he became first head of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic church in Canada, remaining to 1927. His pastoral letter of 27-July-1914, on the eve of the First World War, created considerable controversy at the time and remains a subject of debate in Canadian Ukrainian historiography. On his return to Europe, Budka was named vicar general of the L’viv archeparcy. In 1945 the Soviet authorities arrested and deported him.’

What better time is there to hold this international event than during the season when those of our membership and guests can come to southern Ontario?! Yes, fall! The beautiful colours of fall, heralded in through a visually dazzling display by our trees, the scarlets and purples, oranges and yellows, painted against the beautiful azure-coloured sky. There’s nothing better, especially after having experienced the exhibit material, the camaraderie, some bites, and a cup of tea or two, that UPNS members and friends are so well known for.

We will see displays including stamps, covers and postal cards, coins and notes, medals and ribbons, and more of the other collectibles that reflect our heritage, and link the past with the present. The show and bourse will take place at one of Toronto’s most popular Ukrainian churches, St. Demetrius the Great Martyr Parish in Toronto. Easy to get to by car or train from any direction, and close and simple from the airport!

We have a bevy of volunteers ready and eager to get going on the frames that will house the exhibits, and tables and chairs set-up, as soon as we arrive at that time!

Many of you may well remember the last time we had our international show in Toronto, during 2007, taking place at the wonderful KUMF facility in mid-town Toronto. This year’s event takes us to a location in Toronto’s suburbs, a modern facility in a very clean part of north-west Toronto, with plenty of parking and lots of space. We are quite certain that you will be very pleased!

One of the judges during the 2007 show, Frank Alusio, will again judge at this show joined by our own quite knowledgeable and capable Val Zabijaka.

In terms of hotels, we have made arrangements with the Travelodge Hotel near the airport. Minutes from Toronto International Airport, and an easy eight kilometre (five mile) drive from the church.  Rooms are $85.00 and up on the Business floor (king size beds).  They provide continental breakfast and a complimentary airport shuttle.  Call them directly at 416-674-2222 in order to get the special rate by Friday, September 7.  Quote reference CGUKCS.

More timely information will follow as our event comes closer. Entry form and prospectus information are available on our UPNS website, as well as through the Trident Visnyk. Circle on your calendar for that time of the year, for your pleasure, enjoyment, and participation in our passion, the history of Ukraine and diaspora as reflected through collectibles. We hope to see you!
